Throwing the "punga" (machete)
April 10, 2017
Dear Family
So, I just began the Book of Mormon for the third time on mission and will share some things I have learned. 1 Nephi 1:20, Nephi is writing this at a later date. He is reflecting at the fulfillment of the Lord's promises to his "chosen" people(D&C 138:55-56). Fast forward(or rewind?) to 1 Nephi 2:21. The Lord chose Nephi because of his faith and diligence in seeking the Lord with lowliness of heart(1 Nephi 2:19). A partnership was then made, "And inasmuch as thy brethren shall rebel against thee, they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord." The power of the Lord was with him and Nephi knew it(1 Nephi 3:7&15). I am trying to rely on the Spirit and the Lord and I will focus on the basics so I can do the Lord's wonderful work His way.
I LOVE you guys,
Elder Voyles
Dear Family
I am happy you all had fun. I really love D.C. and hope I can go with the fam when I get back. The bikes looked fun, I am happy to be able to see you having fun like that together. AND THE FOOOD. Man I miss the food! Me and my comp are pooooor this week. We spent all our money on taxis because we're busy. I will be okay though, don't feel bad. My favorite part about mission is the single responsibility of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You don't have to worry about life or anything, just mission work. Its nice. The most challenging, that's hard. Probably being a little bored sometimes. That sounds bad and it's even hard to explain but you can't be doing something super exciting 24/7. However......today we cleaned up the other Elder's back yard and I was throwing a punga (machete) into a piece of wood like it was my job! It was SWEET! Also, I am trying to learn Afrikaans but it is hard. I will speak it by the time I go home though! I am healthy and am enjoying my time serving the Lord. I am trying my best! I hope you have a wonderful week. You are the best!
Love,
Your Son

Dear Mom, Dad and Cooper,
So, about the culture here. It is considered impolite to not ask how people are doing before you talk. But it doesn't really need to be at length. There isn't really no-no's, just don't be rude, really. Church is a little different, it is a branch. It is still pretty normal though. When speakers say good morning everyone says it back. This week has been good, it flew by. We have 3 people on date for baptism. Two for May 6th and one for the 13th. Pray for them to have courage because that is what they need. I am doing really good, I am very happy too. I just want to do and be what the Lord wants. I also look forward to speaking to you guys next month. I love you so much, have a wonderful week!
Love,
Your Son and Brother
